A blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot, the powerful 2005 Latour is even higher in alcohol and tannin than the extraordinary 2003 (which I believe is a more generously styled wine). The 2005 is a quintessential Latour built for the ages. Monumental levels of concentration and tannin are found in this dense ruby/purple-colored effort. Aromas and flavors of liquid stones, graphite, black cherries, and cassis emerge from this massive yet fresh, lively, incredibly well-delineated Latour. This offering will test the patience of its purchasers as it will require 10-15 years of cellaring, and will keep for a minimum of 4-5 decades. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2060. Ask just about anybody which first-growth is pushing quality to the highest level, and the majority will claim it is Latour. With owner Francois Pinault giving perfectionist administrator Frederic Engerer carte blanche, this estate has been producing spectacular wines since 2000. New cellars, winemaking facilities, and barrel rooms only add to their ability to produce classic wines. Production is much smaller than at other Medoc first-growths with only 44% of the 2005 production making it into the grand vin.

currant, with hints of Indian spices and cigar box, lead to a full-bodied
palate, with ultrafine tannins and a beautiful balance of blackberry, raspberry

palate. This is a Latour with fabulous tone and vigor. Best after 2018.

A terrific effort from Administrator Frederic Engerer and owner Francois Pinault, the dark ruby/purple-tinged 2004 Latour exhibits a strong cassis character intermixed with notes of crushed rocks, earth, cedar, and forest floor. Racy, elegant, but powerful with medium to full body, and sweet tannin, it will benefit from 5-7 years of cellaring, and should keep for three decades. It is a very impressive offering. There are only 10,800 cases (rather than the normal 15,000-20,000) of the 2003 Latour, a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot (13.3% finished alcohol). A prodigious effort, it boasts a saturated purple color as well as a gorgeous perfume of smoke, cedar, creme de cassis, flowers, crushed rocks, and blackberries. Massive and multi-layered, with huge richness and low acidity, it is about as unctuous as a young Latour can be. It could be compared to the 1982, but it may be even more pure, at least at this early stage, than that monumental wine. The level of intensity builds prodigiously in the mouth, and the finish lasts nearly a minute. Disarmingly accessible (although analytically the tannin level is high), I suspect it will ultimately shut down, but it was performing impeccably when I tasted it. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040+. What can one say about proprietor Francois Pinault and his manager, Frederic Engerer? A strong argument can be made that in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004, Latour produced the wine of the vintage, although it has plenty of competition in the Northern Medoc in 2003. Moreover, the bargains are the estate’s least expensive cuvee, Pauillac, followed by Les Forts de Latour, Latour’s second wine which continues to increase in quality.

刷新されたシャトー・ラトゥールの作品は樽に入っていた頃より瓶詰めされてからの方が一層良好な出来を見せている。メドックでは、ラトゥールがワイン・オブ・ザ・ヴィンテージとなったようだし、多分これを凌駕したのはオーゾンヌやパヴィのようなほんの一握りの右岸のワインだけである。輝かしいワインで、超大作の2000年よりはるかに早く飲めるようになるだろう。
ラトゥール2001年は縁までインクのような/ルビー/紫色をしており、ブラックカラント、細かく砕いた小石、ヴァニラ、ほのかなトリュフやオークの、壮麗なブーケを誇る。ブレンド比率はカベルネ・ソーヴィニョンが80％で、残りは主にメルロと、わずかながらカベルネ・フランとプティ・ヴェルドである。味わってみると甘みがあるが、これは若いラトゥールにしては異例な事だ。タンニン、酸、樽香の見事なまとまりは素晴らしく、口蓋を流れていく舌触りや、純粋さ、存在感も素晴らしい。瓶詰めされてから３度試飲したが、甘美で、驚くほど目が開いた、フルボディのラトゥールである。ただし、熟成能力を見誤らないこと。早熟なワインだが、20〜25年は持ちこたえるはずである。

1996年、1990年、1982年を合成したかのようなスタイルをしており、1996年の構造を持ちながら、1990年や1982年のみずみずしさ、ブドウの完熟感、コクのある、凝縮感のある果実味も持っている。
縁いっぱいまで濃いルビー/紫色をしており、ジャムにでもしたかのような黒系果実に混ざり合った土、ヴァニラ、グリルしたナッツ、ミネラルの豪華なアロマがある。
若いラトゥールにしては著しいほど継ぎ目がないが、グラスに注いでおくと、酸と成長していない強いタンニンが衝撃を与え始める。
とろりとしたスタイルをしているので、フィニッシュまでタンニンを判別できないかもしれない。
うっとりさせられるワインである。
十分な飲み頃になった時には、100点満点になるかならないかというものになるはずだ。

A spectacular Latour, the 1996 may be the modern day clone of the 1966, only riper. This vintage, which is so variable in Pomerol, St.-Emilion, and Graves, was fabulous for the late-harvested Cabernet Sauvignon of the northern Medoc because of splendid weather in late September and early October. An opaque purple color is followed by phenomenally sweet, pure aromas of cassis infused with subtle minerals. This massive offering possesses unreal levels of extract, full body, intensely ripe, but abundant tannin, and a finish that lasts for nearly a minute. Classic and dense, it displays the potential for 50-75 years of longevity. Although still an infant, it would be educational to taste a bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050.

非常によくできた、親しみやすいスタイルのラトゥールで、10年から15年は熟成を続けるだろう。もしかするとそれ以上発達するかもしれず、そうすれば間違いなくもっと高い点がつくだろう。

私が思っていたほど畏敬の念を抱く超大作にはなっていない。
暗いルビー/紫色をしているが、2000年、1996年、1995年のようなヴィンテージに見られる縁いっぱいまでの濃さがないのだ。ローストした、土っぽい、暑い年の特徴の持ち主で、酸は極めて弱い。
肉づきのよい、魅惑的な、豪勢な舌触りをした風味があり、フルボディのフィニッシュには相当な量のグリセリンやタンニンも感じられる。甘い、近づきやすい、魅惑的なアタックをしていたが、口に含むと閉じてしまった。
少なくともあと6〜10年セラーで寝かせる必要がある。25〜30年は持ちこたえるはずだが、私自身を含めて多くの観察者が思っていたほど不死身な古典になれるのだろうか。

This wine was tasted at a vertical tasting held in Charlotte, North Carolina several days before the Christie tasting. The Latour staff spoke far more highly of the 1989 than my experience has shown. It possesses many characteristics that make great vintages of Bordeaux so alluring - softness, overripeness, and sweet fruit. The problem is that there are insufficient quantities of these components. An evolved dark ruby color reveals amber at the edge. The nose offers aromas of caramel, coffee, ripe black cherry and currant fruit, cedar, and spice box. Although medium-bodied, with low acidity, the wine lacks richness in the mid-palate, and is surprisingly abrupt in the finish. It is a very fine, delicious Latour, but it is hard to believe it will attain the weight and flavor dimensions its producers suggest. Anticipated maturity: now-2020.

It is surpassed in this vintage (which favored the northern Medoc and Cabernet Sauvignon) by its rivals, Lafite-Rothschild and Mouton-Rothschild. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020.

The wine is medium-bodied, with sweet fruit on the attack, but it narrows out to reveal dry tannin and herbaceous notes. Anticipated maturity: now-2012.

濃厚な、光を通さないほど濃いガーネット色をした1982年ラトゥールは、縁には心持ち琥珀色も見られる。甘い、スモーキーな、ローストしたアロマが感じられるノーズと一体になった、ジャムにしたようなレベルのブラックカラント、チェリー、プルーンを思わせる果実味がある。
並はずれた凝縮感やとろみを持っていて、厚みのある、ふくよかな舌触りからにじみ出る趣は西洋杉、タバコ、コーヒー、過熟した果実を思わせる。弱めの酸と、（ボルドーにしては）高いアルコールのため、なおさらグリセリンの多い、噛みごたえのある舌触りとなっている。
フィニッシュは永遠に続く。遠縁でも似ているラトゥールがあるとしたら、似たような舌触りや多汁性を持つ1961年だけである。

これは長年評価の難しかったワイン。複数のテイスティング・ノートで、スタイルと品質を表す言葉が大きく変動していることでも分かる。
ほとんどの例で、1979年のラトゥールは内向的で収斂味があり、またミディアムボディでほどよい果実味がある。
非常に豊かさのある2例では、酸味が顕著でミディアムボディ、古典的なラトゥールのミネラル、胡桃、黒い果実の特徴があった。
以前も言ったことだが、このワインは傑作である1971年のラトゥールのライトボディ版である。

Hard and dense in the mouth, with tough, astringent tannin, a steely constitution, plenty of concentration, but an unflattering, backward style, this youthful 1975 is capable of lasting two more decades. Tasted from my personal cellar, the 1971 Latour is undoubtedly the wine of the Medoc, and possibly the wine of the vintage (Petrus and Trotanoy are also splendid efforts). Drinkable young, it has continued to evolve, offering extraordinary aromatic complexity as well as surprisingly deep, concentrated flavors atypical for the vintage.
A dark opaque garnet color with amber at the edge is followed by a spectacular bouquet of dried herbs, cedar, smoky black fruit, and coffee. Rich, but structured, with moderate tannin, this medium-bodied, elegant yet complex wine possesses a sweet mid-palate in addition to a long, concentrated finish with abundant tannin. This underrated 1971 has been fully mature for over a decade, but it reveals no signs of cracking up or becoming attenuated. Anticipated maturity: now-2012. |

Latour continues to be one of the great vintages for this chateau. A dense opaque garnet color reveals amber at the edge, as well as an incredible perfume of cedar wood, balsam, coffee, black fruits, leather, and cigar smoke. The wine is supple and full-bodied, with sweet tannin, glorious levels of fruit and extract, abundant glycerin, and a seductive, truffle-flavored finish. While it has been drinkable for two decades, it is capable of lasting another 20 years. It is a perfectly balanced, exciting Latour that remains undervalued as well as underrated.

This is an interesting as well as great vintage for Latour. As indicated in my barrel tasting report, Latour's 1994 possesses an atypically high percentage of Merlot (27%) in the final blend. Because of this, the wine appears to have a sweeter, more fleshy texture than is typical for a young Latour, but do not make the mistake of thinking this will be a commercially-styled, easy to drink wine. It exhibits an opaque dark ruby/purple color, and a backward, intense textbook nose of walnut and cassis scents complemented by smoky pain grille notes that build in the glass. This full-bodied, powerful, layered Latour reveals high tannin, but no bitterness or astringency. The superb purity, fabulous precision, and remarkable length should ensure 35-40 years of longevity. Readers will find more fat, flesh, and glycerin than usual for a young Latour (save for such great vintages as 1982 and 1990), but don't be deceived, this wine requires 8-10 years of cellaring. This is a beauty, but not the awesome blockbuster I remembered. There is a roasted, earthy, hot year character with extremely low acidity, fleshy, seductive, opulently-textured flavors, and a full-bodied finish with considerable amounts of glycerin and tannin. The wine was sweet, accessible, and seductive on the attack, but it closed down in the mouth. Interestingly, when I previously tasted this wine (about six months ago) from a bottle in my cellar, I found it to be impenetrable, needing at least 6-10 years of further cellaring. Based on this example from the Chateau's cellar, it could be drunk now. In any event, it will last 25-30 years, but is it the immortal classic many observers, including myself, thought it was? Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030.

1981年は、これほど若いラトゥールとしては驚くほど、ビロードのようにしなやかだ。これは悪いことではない。というのも、このワインの秀逸さ、複雑さ、豊かさはしっかり残っているからだ。
色は暗いルビー色で、ブーケは熟したカシスとスパイシーなオークがたっぷり含まれ、味わいはコクがあって絹のよう。適度なタンニンがあり、フィニッシュは長い。このラトゥールは1971年と似てくるのかもしれない。

1997年はほかのものも多く試したが、それらと同じように、ラトゥールも非常に熟成の進んだ、柔らかな、早熟なワインであることがすぐに分かる。ラトゥールのエネルギッシュな二人組、フレデリック・アンジュレールとクリスティアン・ル・ソメールによると、1997年のラトゥールは、ちょうどあの輝かしい1967年（このヴィンテージ上位2〜3位に入る極上ワイン、31年間にわたり限りない楽しみを与えてくれている）のような成長をしそうだという。
ラトゥールの1997年は（総生産の49％が最終的なブレンドになった）76％のカベルネ・ソーヴィニョン、19％のメルロ、4％のカベルネ・フラン、1％のプティ・ヴェルドから成る。収穫は早く（9月8日）から始まり、断続的に2週間あまり行われ、最後は9月25日だった。
超大作の1996年とは違って、1997年は表情豊かな開いたワインですでに楽しく飲める。この深いルビーから紫色のクラレットは、クランベリー・ジャムとブラックカラントの絡み合った成長したアロマを放ち、まぎれもないラトゥールのしるしである強いミネラル分を含む。
ラトゥールの基準から見れば広大とか巨大とかいったものではなく、むしろエレガントで甘い、ブドウの熟したアタックと、ビロードのようなタンニン、ミディアムボディを備え、まろやかな、気品ある、スタイリッシュなフィニッシュを持つと言える。この素敵な開き具合の、調和のとれたラトゥールは、この若さですでに熟成が進んでいる。

First tasted in 1960 when though fairly full-bodied was, surprisingly for Latour, nice to drink at that age. Its strength through the 1960s, fine but peppery. Completely satisfactory in the early 1970s, lovely silkiness and perfect balance. Later more cedary, more earthy, some colour loss. By La Fete du Chateau Latour in 1981 it had a pretty colour, complex, fragrant Cabernet nose, some sweetness, flavoury but no great length. At the Frericks/Wodarz Latour and Mouton tasting it was rich but not deep; quite good Pauillac cedar bouquet but little development; flavoury, with a lightly peppery acidic finish. On the decline.
