Earth-laced blackberries can be discerned in the nose of the 2001 La Tache. Suave, plush, and regal, it boasts loads of candied black fruits in its deep character. This supple wine reveals superb clarity of fruit and an impressively long, fruit-filled finish. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2012. Concerning the 2001s, de Villaine, the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti’s co-director, stated that “it was not an easy year, it was a real roller coaster for vignerons. The estate’s vineyards, like everyone in Burgundy, had rot infestations so we did two harvests, one for the best, healthiest bunches and then another. Of course, we meticulously sorted all the fruit as we always do.” Those readers who are always looking for news concerning the next vintage will be interested to hear the following. Unlike almost all his colleagues who said that 2002 was going to be a spectacular vintage, de Villaine informed me that it would “another irregular year.”

This is a velvety-textured, expansive, and massively ripe wine boasting flavors reminiscent of licorice and blackberry jam. It has superb depth of fruit (particularly for this sometimes "simple" vintage), medium-to-full body, and admirable length to its supple finish. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2012.

It is structured, totally precise, pure, and possesses an exceptionally long finish loaded with abundant sweet tannins. It will require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020.

ラ･ターシュ1995年は、強烈に深遠で超熟しているが、調和がとれている。並外れて余韻の長いフィニッシュ（最後は甘いキルシュのキスで終わる）に私はあっけにとられた。私が愛しているふたつのワインのフィニッシュを考えずにいられなかった――シャトー・ライヤスとシャトー・ラフルールである。おびただしい量を隠し持っているようで、最終的にはさらに高い評点に値するかもしれない。
飲み頃予想：2008年までは飲まずにおくべき。適切な条件のセラーなら2020年まではたやすく持ちこたえるだろう。

The 1989 exhibits a healthy dark ruby color, followed by a smoky, oak-dominated nose with obvious ripe black fruit that is currently taking a back seat to the wine's wood and structure. Medium to full-bodied, with excellent to outstanding concentration, as well as more noticeable acidity than was evident from barrel, and a tendency to narrow out on the palate, this is a highly promising La Tache that appears to be better than the monolithic, perplexingly simple 1988. Give it 1-2 more years of cellaring and drink it over the following 10-12.

PRODUCTION: Not available. The fully mature 1987 La Tache exhibits a medium ruby color with some amber at the edge. The tell-tale DRC nose of smoky, gamy scents intertwined with those of ripe berry fruit and herbs is followed by a wine with noticeably high acidity, good weight, full body, and some tannin to shed. The wine should drink well for another 7-8 years, although the acidity may begin to dominate the fruit.

La Tache, made from 35-year-old vines, is a brooding infant. Splendidly perfumed (a trait shared by all their 1986 wines), it showed great depth and richness but plenty of mouthsearing tannins that suggest it needs until 1995-1996. It is quite a big, bold, dramatic red burgundy (as all this domaine's wines tend to be), but it would be a shame to drink it before 1995. This is among the few superstars of this vintage, but the 1986 is not for drinking soon-patience is most definitely required.

PRODUCTION: 1,624 cases. A brilliant wine from cask, the 1985 La Tache remains expansive and fragrant, but bottle age appears to have given the wine more delicacy and lightness. The color is an extremely light ruby, with no signs of age. The nose offers up gobs of sweet, overripe red and black fruits intertwined with smoky, toasty new oak. On the palate, there is sweet, jammy fruit, full body, a harmonious interaction of tannin, acidity, and fruit, and a luscious, silky-textured finish. Given my high praise for this wine, I would have hoped for more, but performances such as this are further proof that Burgundy is indeed the wine for free-spending masochists. This wine should continue to drink well for another 5-7 years, but it needs to be closely monitored given the fact that in 1995 it exhibits less weight and depth than I would have anticipated. Although it is unquestionably an outstanding wine, I had hoped for something riveting.

Medium-full colour. Not too brown. Indeed still vigorous. Good classy plump fruit on the nose. This is ripe and has plenty of interest. This is really astonishingly good for this sad vintage. Very good depth and grip. Long complex ripe finish. Will still last well.

PRODUCTION: 1,097 cases. The most controversial vintage over the last several decades, the 1983 reveals a dark ruby/garnet color with noticeable lightening at the edge. The intoxicatingly perfumed bouquet offers up intense aromas of earth, mushrooms, sweet, overripe black-raspberry fruit, prunes, smoke, and Asian spices. The complex aromatics are followed by a powerful, tannic, highly concentrated wine with immense body, some astringency, and a huge, alcoholic, rich, glycerin-dominated finish. While it is not the purest example of La Tache, it is one of the few great expressions of this vintage. It should drink well for another 10-15+ years, although the color will continue to become more degraded with aging.

Last Tasted 1/92 Even more aromatic than the 1982 DRC Richebourg, this rich, velvety, soft, somewhat loosely structured wine currently provides delicious drinking. There is plenty of the smoky, exotic, mineral, and oriental spice character that one usually finds in La Tache, but less grip and focus. Owners should move quickly to consume this wine.

PRODUCTION: 1,976 cases. This is a justifiably fabled vintage of La Tache, but owners of it should not push their luck. The 1978 has been fully mature for over five years. The color is a murky plum with some lightening at the edge. The wine offers an exquisite nose of smoked meats, jammy black fruits, floral scents, minerals, and damp forest-like aromas, as well as that unmistakable DRC prune-like character that comes from over-ripe fruit. Full-bodied and fleshy, with a chewy mid-palate revealing exceptional opulence, this silky-textured, smooth wine possesses high alcohol and a viscous finish. Drink it over the next 5-6 years. In magnum, this wine might be perfect!

PRODUCTION: 2,115 cases. An inconsistent year for the DRC wines, the 1976 La Tache possesses extremely high alcohol, ferocious levels of tannin, and a disjointed, diffuse character. It offers the earthy, smoked game, spicy, ripe components of a top vintage, but the wine has a hole in the middle and the structure dominates the wine's personality. The tea and vegetal aspects of Pinot Noir emerge as the wine sits in the glass. It is likely to dry out further with cellaring, so drink it up.

1973 La TACHE
Unimpressive, with youthful bitterness in 1977, yet after only three more years in bottel, a remarkable blossoming. But it all seemed rather premature, a distinct browning noted. At 10 years of age, rather lean, very dry. Better flavour than nose; its adolescent bloom seemed faded. Last noted at the Domaine in May 1983. Then but it will be interesting to see how this has fared.

PRODUCTION: 1,444 cases. This is an odd performing wine, with an intense, vegetal nose which, if I did not know I was tasting La Tache, I would have thought was a 20-year old Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon from Monterey, California. The color exhibits considerable brown and orange, and the wine reveals a compact, surprisingly austere style for a DRC wine. Some tasters dwelled on the intellectual side of this wine, noting it had personality and character, but from a hedonistic point of view it was mediocre, not to mention bizarre.

Marvellous though I thought it lacked the racinesss of the '62, more four-square.Next,at the tasting at the Domaine in 1983:impressively deep,huge for La Tache and with "30years life"ahead.Two years later,in magnum:impressively deep,rich,with lovely gradations of colour ;very fragrant,spaicy,peppery nose;very sweet,full of alchohol,extract,flavour.Vast yet velvety.A great wine.
