The beginning of fireworks festivals dates back to 1733. It is said that around 20 fireworks were launched by Yahei Kagiya, the sixth generation of the Kagiya family, to commemorate the victims of a cholera outbreak in Edo and to ward off evil spirits.
Our Akita Prefecture's "Omagari Fireworks." Now boasting the largest scale in Japan, its beginnings were quite humble. In 1910, during the annual festival of Suwa Shrine in Daisen City, local people launched fireworks as entertainment, marking the origin of the event.
The event was originally called the "Ou Six Prefectures Fireworks Competition." It started as a community-based event involving six prefectures.
